Pregnancy is an amazing ride, but the plus-size mom-to-be may have an even more thrilling one — and not always for the right reasons. The world does not always play nice with all body types and that little baby house needs a lot of nurturing from you!

If you're here, you probably want more than cookie cutter advice. Objectively, you want the truth, and you want reassurance, you want your hand held. You want to feel seen — not just weighed. We're going to take a deep breath now. 🌬️And now perhaps we can begin to softly blow the cobwebs away from the parts of plus-size pregnancy that need (and deserve) a little more light, love and holistic support.

Honoring Your Body's Wisdom

You are not a risk factor. Some protocols will vary depending on your BMI, but that does not mean your body is unable, or dangerous. Your body is doing one of the most miraculous things it will ever do: making life. Let's center that.

Holistic tip:

Find care givers who will treat you as a whole person, not simply as number on the scale. Seek size-inclusive OBs, or midwives, or birth workers who lead with respect and trauma-informed care.

When Bias Isn't Just a Personal Problem

Regrettably, many pregnant individuals who are plus-size say they feel dismissed or judged during visits to the doctor. This is not your fault — and it is O.K. to feel hurt, angry, sad. But you needn't stay silent.

You can say:

"I would rather today we were all focused on the baby's health, not weight."

"Can we talk about evidence-based options for people of all sizes?"

You know your body best. You can switch providers, bring an advocate to an appointment and ask questions — particularly if something doesn't seem to add up.

Acting Through Ultrasound, Blood Pressure Cuffs & More

Being real—some medical equipment is made by people who don't consider plus-size bodies, which can make it uncomfortable, even anxiety-producing.

What helps:

  • Ask them beforehand if they have larger blood pressure cuffs, ultrasound alternatives etc.
  • Ask for belly bands or fetal monitors that accommodate higher BMIs, when preparing for labor.

Preparation isn't paranoia—it's empowerment. And you owe yourself comfort as much as information.

Dressing the Bump (When Maternity Fashion Isn't for You)

The hunt for clothes that hit the right clothing comfort buttons can be tough. But the plus-size maternity scene is slowly getting better.

Favorite brands to explore:

  • Kindred Bravely: "They are comfortable and inclusive and postpartum friendly."
  • PinkBlush Maternity: Trendy plus-size clothes for all three trimesters.
  • Storq & Universal Standard: Your new neutral staples to wear even after kids.

Pro tip: Don't wait until you "look pregnant enough" to buy clothes that make you happy in your own body. You are worthy now.

Body Image: Belly Shapes & Self-Talk

Plus-size bumps come in all shapes — some round and high, some lower or B-shaped. It doesn't make your pregnancy less real.

And while society isn't shouting it from the rooftops, we can, damnit.

"I let go of comparison and walk the path that's mine."

Journal, snap bump pics, or even treat yourself to a photo shoot—don't forget that's worth capturing too!

Building a Body-Positive Birth Plan

You deserve a birth experience based in dignity, not fear. Whether you have a hospital birth, home birth, or anything in between—your comfort, your preferences, your voice count.

Consider:

  • A doula who is experienced in plus-size support.
  • A HAES-aligned (Health at Every Size) care team.
  • Birth classes anchored in inclusivity and agency.

Birth is not one-size-fits-all. Let your plan reflect you.
